Doctor’s Hospital

This 1914 structure was one of four designed in the U.S. by Schmidt, Garden & Martin for employees of the Illinois Central Railroad. A proposal to demolish the former Illinois Central Hospital—more recently known as Doctors Hospital—has galvanized preservationists and residents in the Hyde Park neighborhood. The property’s current owner, the University of Chicago, has proposed razing the 94-year-old Classical Revival-style building, in order to construct a 250-unit Marriott Hotel and a 130-unit Fairfield Inn.
