Formerly the fourth largest U.S. city, Detroit, has experienced significant declines since the 1950s as the population shifted towards the suburbs. Detroit’s prosperity has been closely pegged to the success of the U.S. auto industry, which it is a metonymy. Though still fighting to revive its metropolitan center, Detroit still symbolizes one of the most epic collapses through out the Midwestern Rust Belt.
